This Weekend, Not One But Two Garden Festivals!

Saturday is calling for temps in the mid 70s with plenty of sunshine. In short, it will be perfect. What better way to take advantage of such flawless weather than to visit a pair of local greenspaces? And if you needed more incentive, both are hosting festivals this weekend to help you celebrate the fact we haven’t had a freak snowflake-sighting in more than 10 days!

In the shadow of the Gowanus Expressway, just west of Fourth Avenue, you’ll find the 0.216-acre 64th Street Community Garden. First planted in 2011 1999, the garden has hosted free outdoor movies, live music, barbecues, and the all-time greatest form of entertainment—pony rides. We have recieved no notices of ponies for 2015, but we do know there will be a garden festival from 12pm-3pm that features free food, which is pretty nice. Plus, kid-friendly themed activities! The same day, the Narrows Botanical Garden—now celebrating its 20th anniversary, and known as much for its special events as for its beauty—kicks off this weekend with the Spring Plant Sale. From 10am-4pm, you can buy herbs, tomato varietals, flower plants and native species for planting in your planters, window boxes, or yard. All sales benefit the NBG, a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that maintains the garden and organizes its events.

While you’re down there supporting your neighborhood, make sure you visit the garden’s newest addition—these adorable baby chicks. Remember that they grow very fast, meaning that in only a few weeks they’ll just be regular ol’chickens, which are perfectly fine but don’t have the same “Awwwwwwwww!” factor.
