While Greek civilization has been around since 2700 BCE, our local Greek Cultural Festival is only in its 12th successful year. In 2003, the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church began the festival—which begins today at 2pm, rain or shine, on Ridge Boulevard, between 84th and 86th streets—as a small, vibrant, fun and unique street fair that differed from the sprawling Third Avenue and Fifth Avenue festivals by being compact and focusing on Greek culture, music and food (while also offering rides and games). Vendors will be on hand as well, creating an open-air flea-market vibe.
The website touts an outdoor Greek taverna and nightly Greek dancing (to Yianni Papastefanou and Orchestra on Friday, and Fantasia Music on Saturday). Opa!
