Handiwork / Social Work

May 29, 2015 @ 6:15 pm - 8:45 pm

$5

Textiles from different countries including: India, Vietnam. Latvia and Norway, etc, will be on display. There will also be handiwork demonstrations, including, but not limited to: knitting, crocheting, and quilting.

Handiwork was often relegated to women, but not always. It often served as social unification for communities, such as at quilting bees. At other times it served as a connector threading grandmother to mother to granddaughter, as family designs and skills were passed on.

The program will begin with time to look at the displays and demos. There will be a hand-on project with paper weaving. Artist Isabelle Garbani will be working with all who attend and wish to be part of her exciting art piece.

We will then have a time for show and tell of family heirlooms or collected handiwork. (You are encouraged to bring in a piece of handiwork from your family or one that you cherish.) This will be followed by a discussion about the cultural differences in handiwork and the similarities. Light refreshments will be served. The cost is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children.
